Great Bear opened in 1966 as a modest ski hill with one rope tow and two runs. In the 60 years since, Great Bear has grown steadily into a well-used and beloved community resource.Â
A designated Sioux Falls city park, Great Bear is a testament to community investment and a commitment to year-round outdoor culture right here on the Eastern Plains of South Dakota.
Great Bear leadership has a clear vision for activating the park’s full potential and is inviting the community to share in that vision through a proposed capital campaign. The campaign would fund a set of projects that will enhance all four seasons at Great Bear.
Every acre of usable park ground will be given purpose. Terrain that is currently unused or underutilized will be developed so the full footprint of the park supports the experience Great Bear offers.
Great Bear is working with Maximizing Excellence, in collaboration with the City of Sioux Falls, to conduct a feasibility study for this project to evaluate the viability and fundraising potential of this major initiative.
Proposed project overview:
- Skiable terrain will be expanded from 20 to 27 acres with a second chairlift, giving skiers and riders more runs and greater variety across ability levels.Â
- Warm weather months will come to life at Great Bear with expanded hiking and mountain bike trails, an Adventure Park, and greater opportunity for recreation and events.
- At the center of the project is a reimagined chalet totaling 35,000 usable square feet, designed to accommodate weddings, reunions, and other events while also meeting the day-to-day and season-to-season needs of Great Bear’s staff and guests.
- The outcome of this campaign will be year-round activation of the park, establishing it as one of Sioux Falls’ top recreational destinations, event venues, and natural areas.
Great Bear is excited about the future and eager to share this vision with the growing community. The feasibility study will report on the project’s viability and a potential timeline.
